CrossOver Healthcare Ministry on October 17, 2024, for the Compassionate Care Awards 2024: Threads of Hope and Healing. A 6 p.m. reception will be followed by a 7 p.m. dinner and program. Our 2024 honorees are Anne Granger, Commonwealth Endodontics, and Margaret Phelps.
This year, CrossOver honors an eclectic group of community members and partners that exemplify the power of community and interconnectedness. Since our founding in 1983, we have relied on our community to come together so that we can help our neighbors most in need. CrossOver is powered by over 400 volunteers, 55 employees, and dozens of community partners that come together to provide high quality, compassionate healthcare. This past fiscal year, CrossOver served over 7,000 patients for the first time in our history.
We hope you will join us to honor Anne Granger, Commonwealth Endodontics, and Margaret Phelps, and to celebrate CrossOver's thriving community of compassionate supporters.
Anne Granger, RN
Anne has been volunteering as a registered nurse at CrossOver for the past 15 years, beginning at the Richmond Clinic and more recently at the Henrico Clinic.
Her main role in the clinic is working with staff and fellow volunteers to prepare patients to be seen by the medical providers. She also mentors’ students and new volunteers. Anne enjoys the challenge of assessing the needs of patients in multiple disciplines and many times in a language that she does not speak. The patients come from different countries and cultures, and the needs are compelling. Anne simply enjoys using her clinical training and caregiving skills as part of a faith-based mission.
In addition to her role in the clinic, Anne has participated in community fundraising events, photographing runners at the CrossOver Challenge and co-chairing the inaugural Spring into Action Women's Breakfast. Anne is a member of CrossOver nurses' council. She also enjoys working special vaccine and back-to-school clinics that ensure children can start school on time. Anne may be best known by the staff and other volunteers for the cakes, cookies, lunches and other treats that she prepares for special events or for no reason at all.
Before volunteering at CrossOver, Anne worked at the Medical University of South Carolina, the Medical College of Virginia and St. Mary’s Hospital, first as an ICU nurse and then as a nurse anesthetist. She retired for a number of years while raising four children with her husband, Doug. She returned to the healthcare world initially as a substitute school nurse at Collegiate School but has found her true calling serving Richmond’s most underserved populations at Crossover Healthcare Ministry.
Commonwealth Endodontics
Commonwealth Endodontics (CWE) has been a cornerstone in Richmond's dental care landscape for over 25 years, consistently setting the highest standards in endodontic treatment. Specializing in preserving natural teeth through advanced techniques and compassionate care, CWE operates state-of-the-art facilities across eight convenient locations in Richmond, including recent expansions to Chester and Charlottesville.
Led by a team of dedicated professionals including Drs. Martinez, Vranas, Madelyn Morris, Michael Morris, Finkler, Schroeder, Birsch, Ather, and Vaughn, CWE offers a comprehensive range of services. These include root canal therapy, endodontic retreatment, microsurgery, and specialized management of dental trauma and cracked teeth. Their commitment to patient comfort is evident through offerings such as nitrous oxide, oral anxiolysis, conscious sedation, and general anesthesia, ensuring a stress-free experience for those with dental anxiety.
In addition to their clinical excellence, CWE has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to community service. Their partnership with CrossOver Healthcare Ministries spans over 15 years, during which CWE has donated over $500,000 in dental care to underserved populations in the greater Richmond area. This dedication to giving back recently earned CWE the prestigious 2024 Compassionate Care Award from CrossOver Healthcare Ministries.
This award recognizes CWE not only for their clinical expertise but also for their profound impact on the community, embodying a commitment to compassionate care and service to those in need.
Margaret Phelps
Margaret Phelps is the leader of the Sewing Circle, a ministry of River Road Church, Baptist, and hosted at CrossOver since 2017. Margaret spent her career as a piano teacher and children’s choir director, working alongside Carl Freeman, a talented organist and choirmaster. With 50 years of teaching experience, and a lifetime of sewing experience, she decided to start teaching beginner level sewing classes to CrossOver’s patients. Under Margaret’s leadership, the Sewing Circle has expanded to offer quilting, knitting, and crocheting. When COVID-19 struck, she created sewing kits for people to take home and provided virtual instruction, giving members a sense of community and togetherness during the pandemic.
The Sewing Circle has proven to be a tremendous source of community building, bringing together people from diverse cultural backgrounds. The group, which is affectionately nicknamed the “Sewing Sisterhood” has helped many in the group, including Margaret, through challenging times. Margaret cherishes watching the group help each other and form friendships outside of the Sewing Circle. One of Margaret’s proudest accomplishments has been seeing 4 of her first students become instructors.
Outside of her volunteer work, Margaret and her husband, Chester, split their time between Richmond and their family farm in Lunenburg, Virginia, where Margaret was born. She enjoys spending time with her family, including four grandchildren, and is actively involved with her church, River Road Church, Baptist. Sewing is something of a tradition in Margaret’s family, which she learned from her mother at a young age. Her family continues to support Margaret’s work with the Sewing Circle. Chester and her son, Doug, helped build the Sewing Circle’s new supply closet, and her granddaughter, Emma, is one of the Sewing Circle teachers.
Margaret’s motivation to continue this work stems from her desire to fulfill her mission locally in Richmond. After participating in many mission trips over the years, the most meaningful one ended up being right here in Richmond. Her guiding principle is, “Don’t be afraid of the light that shines within you.”
